 Description

The flame-colored tanager (Piranga bidentata), formerly known as the stripe-backed tanager, is a medium-sized American songbird. Formerly placed in the tanager family Thraupidae, other members of its genus and it are now classified in the cardinal family Cardinalidae. The species's plumage and vocalizations are similar to other members of the cardinal family. A tropical passerine bird, the flame-colored tanager is found in the mountains of Mexico, and throughout Central America to northern Panama; it is occasionally seen in the United States in the mountains in the southeast corner of Arizona, the southwest of New Mexico and Sonora (the Madrean sky islands of the northern portion of the western Mexican mountain range, Sierra Madre Occidental), and also the southwest corner of Texas.

  Feeding Habits
Flame-colored Tanager's diet primarily consists of small arthropods and berries. It employs active foraging techniques, often during daylight hours, to find its food. A distinctive trait is its ability to adapt its diet seasonally, shifting preferences based on food availability.
    Habitat
Flame-colored Tanager thrive in the canopy and treetops of moist and humid mountain forests. They frequently inhabit broadleaf forests, including oak and pine–oak woodlands, across temperate highland regions. Flame-colored Tanager can also be found in man-made landscapes, such as coffee plantations, gardens, and other areas with large trees. They generally prefer elevations ranging from approximately 800 meters to the tree line, though they may occur at lower elevations in certain areas within their range.
