Description
The royal spoonbill is a large, white bird with a black, spoon-shaped bill. It is approximately 80 cm (31 in) tall, 74–81 cm (29–32 in) and a weight of 1.4–2.07 kg (3.1–4.6 lb). It is a wading bird and has long legs for walking through water. It eats fish, shellfish, crabs and amphibians, catching its prey by making a side-to-side movement with its bill. The end of the bill of the royal spoonbill is broader and works more like a pair of tongs than the narrower bill of the yellow-billed spoonbill, which acts like a forceps.

Feeding Habits
Royal Spoonbill consumes small aquatic animals using sweeping bill motions to detect prey. They forage by walking, bill-sweeping, and probing in shallow waters, feeding on crustaceans, insects, and fish, with occasional vegetation. Unique bill kinetics enable effective detection and capture of diverse prey.
Habitat
Royal Spoonbill inhabits a variety of wetland environments, thriving in both freshwater and saline habitats. This bird is typically found in swamps, lagoons, sewage ponds, intertidal flats, and shallow lake areas. It also utilizes human-altered landscapes such as flooded pastures and rice fields. While royal Spoonbill has a preference for estuaries, it occasionally settles in coastal regions that include tidal mudflats, salt pans, and mangroves. Nesting occurs within these wetlands, utilizing trees, shrubs, reeds, and sometimes the ground to build their nests, favoring sites in close proximity to aquatic feeding grounds.
