Description
The spectacled weaver (Ploceus ocularis) is a species of bird in the family Ploceidae. It is found widely in woodland, forest edge and gardens of central, eastern and south-eastern Africa, but is absent from the most arid regions (such as the Karoo) and dense, primary rainforest. This common species breeds in solitary pairs, and both sexes are bright yellow, have an olive-yellow back, black "spectacles" and pale eyes. The male has a black throat.
Size
17 cm
Feeding Habits
Spectacled Weaver primarily consumes insects such as grasshoppers, crickets, and caterpillars, with occasional spiders, centipedes, and small crabs. It also eats berries, flowers, nectar, bread, and chicken feed. Spectacled Weaver employs agile foraging, can hang upside-down to probe bark, and sometimes hawks termites mid-flight. It forages alone, in pairs, or groups, often joining mixed-species flocks.
Habitat
The preferred habitats of spectacled Weaver include a variety of wooded environments ranging from savannas with scattered trees to dense bushy thickets and wooded valleys. Spectacled Weaver is also found in forest edges and well-vegetated gardens but is typically absent from lowland and montane forests across broader geographical regions in East Africa.
