Description
The Sichuan tit (Poecile weigoldicus) is a species of bird in the tit family Paridae. It is found in central China. This species was formerly treated as a subspecies of the willow tit (Poecile montanus). It was promoted to species status based on a genetic analysis published in 2002. It is monotypic: no subspecies are recognised.
Feeding Habits
Sichuan Tit feeds primarily on invertebrates, larvae, and vegetable matter. During breeding, sichuan Tit consumes a diverse range of insects, complemented by grains and seeds in other seasons, shifting to 75% plant-based diet in winter. Notable for caching food for winter, sichuan Tit exhibits complex social structures influencing foraging. Habitually forages on trees and occasionally hovers or pursues prey mid-air.
Habitat
The habitat of sichuan Tit predominantly consists of lowland to submontane temperate forests, often with a composition of various coniferous trees. These settings typically include dense and damp woodlands, characterized by a well-developed undergrowth. Sichuan Tit can be found in habitats that feature an abundance of willows and alders, and occasionally within denser, shrubby vegetation along riverbanks and lakesides. The species also inhabits mixed broadleaf forests and is associated with riverine, swampy thickets, and willow beds.
