Description
The white-tailed goldenthroat (Polytmus guainumbi) is a species of hummingbird in the family Trochilidae. It is found in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, French Guiana, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, and Venezuela. Large populations can be noted east of the Andes, from the Amazons to San Juan, and from east Columbia to northern Brazil, just north of the Amazon. Its natural habitats are dry savanna and subtropical or tropical seasonally wet or flooded lowland grassland. The white tailed goldenthroat carries an affinity for water, unlike its smaller counterpart, the Green Tailed goldenthroat for which its often mistaken. Their similar appearances and behvaior, such as trap-lining necter resources and spending a lot of time hawking and gleaming tiny insects, make them easy to mistake for one another.

Feeding Habits
White-tailed Goldenthroat predominantly feeds on nectar from a variety of flowering plants and trees. It employs targeted foraging methods such as hawking to catch insects in flight and gleaning to retrieve spiders from vegetation. White-tailed Goldenthroat is adapted to feed on different plant families, including Leguminosae and Malvaceae.
Habitat
The white-tailed Goldenthroat is typically found in a variety of moist and open habitats including waterlogged grasslands, shrubby savannas, and cerrado landscapes, as well as near freshwater swamps. These environments are characterized by their proximity to water and a degree of grassy or shrub vegetation, offering the conditions necessary for white-tailed Goldenthroat's foraging habits, which occur close to the ground, usually in solitude.
