Description
The white-crested helmetshrike (Prionops plumatus), also known as the white helmetshrike, is a species of passerine bird in the Vanga family Vangidae, formerly usually included in the Malaconotidae.
Size
25 cm
Feeding Habits
White-crested Helmetshrike primarily eats small invertebrates, including caterpillars and beetles, occasionally consuming reptiles and fruit. They forage in groups, employing auditory cues to locate prey within vegetation or on the ground. Unique foraging behaviors include hanging upside-down and aerial hawking, with dietary adaptability evident across seasons.
Habitat
The white-crested Helmetshrike predominantly inhabits subtropical to tropical regions with a preference for dry forests, savannas, and shrubland. Broader regions where they are found encompass a variety of deciduous broadleaf savanna woodlands, especially those characterized by specific flora like Baikiaea and Brachystegia. Apart from the breeding season where they favor woodlands, in the non-breeding season, they disperse to acacia savannas, coastal and riparian forests, forest edges, and even urban gardens. They are known to be drawn to burned areas for foraging, exhibiting adaptability up to altitudes of 2200 meters, though they are typically encountered below 1500 meters.
