Description
The dark-breasted rosefinch (Procarduelis nipalensis) is a true finch species (family Fringillidae). It is found in Bhutan, China, India, Laos, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Thailand, and Vietnam. Its natural habitats are boreal forests and subtropical or tropical high-altitude shrubland.
Size
16 cm
Feeding Habits
Dark-breasted Rosefinch primarily consumes small seeds and berries, along with blossoms, pollen, and nectar from rhododendron flowers, which stain their forehead and throat. They forage actively on the ground, but are shy and typically found in or under vegetation. They feed in pairs, small flocks, or larger single-sex groups, occasionally joining mixed-species flocks.
Habitat
The dark-breasted Rosefinch typically inhabits montane and submontane environments characterized by diverse vegetation. These birds are found in areas with oak, fir, and rhododendron forests, as well as scrublands, grassy slopes, and weed patches. They also reside among stunted bushes, dense patches of Arundinaria bamboo, and in rocky boulderfields. During the non-breeding season, dark-breasted Rosefinch often move to forest clearings, edges, and undergrowths, including regions with cultivated land margins.
