Description
The maroon shining parrot or red shining-parrot, Prosopeia tabuensis, is a species of parrot in the family Psittaculidae. It is endemic to the islands of Vanua Levu and Taveuni in Fiji and was introduced to the islands of southern Tonga in prehistoric times. The species is sometimes considered conspecific with the crimson shining-parrot of Kadavu. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical mangrove forests.

45 cm
Feeding Habits
Red Shining-parrot primarily consumes plant-based foods including Myristica hypargyraea and Psidium guajava. Their diet also features fruit like papaya and wild bananas. They forage for insect larvae in rotting wood. While they do eat some introduced plants, their impact on crops is overstated.
Habitat
The red Shining-parrot's habitat encompasses mature and secondary growth forests, forested valleys, coconut plantations, mangroves, and agricultural areas. Broadly, these birds are indigenous to tropical regions with forested landscapes, including areas where human activity interfaces with natural habitats, such as village gardens and farmlands. They inhabit altitudes mainly above 380 meters, especially in places where lowland areas are altered by agriculture. The red Shining-parrot adapts to environments where forest patches remain within developed landscapes, highlighting both its ability to survive in a variety of forested ecosystems and its vulnerability to habitat modification.
