Description

The russet-backed oropendola (Psarocolius angustifrons) is a species of bird in the family Icteridae. It is found in wooded habitats in the highlands of the northern and central Andes and the Venezuelan Coastal Range, and in lowlands of the western Amazon. It is generally common and widespread. Males are larger than females, but otherwise the genders are similar. Its plumage is mainly olive and brown, and the outer rectrices are contrastingly yellow. The lowland nominate subspecies has a black bill, while the highland subspecies all have pale bills. These have been regarded as separate species, but as they hybridize freely, all major authorities now regard them as a single species.

Feeding Habits
Russet-backed Oropendola is nearly omnivorous, consuming wild fruits like Cecropia, cultivated fruits, nectar, insects, small vertebrates, and pulp from Inga pods. They often forage in flocks, even with other species, using unique methods to capture prey in epiphytes and aerial litter.
Habitat
The habitat of russet-backed Oropendola primarily includes riverine forests alongside white-water rivers, where it occupies the early growth stages of forest, usually in areas rich with Cecropia trees. Russet-backed Oropendola can also be found around oxbow lakes, invading clearings in mature forests, and inhabiting humid subtropical to wet montane regions. They are typical residents of várzea forests, extending into secondary forests, plantations, and foot hill regions along the humid Andes. These birds are known to frequent forested borders, light woodlands, and agricultural areas such as shade-coffee plantations.
