Description
The white-bellied whipbird (Psophodes leucogaster), also called the Mallee whipbird, is a species of bird in the family Psophodidae. It is endemic to southern Australia.
Size
26 cm
Feeding Habits
Black-throated Whipbird consumes a diet of arthropods, chiefly insects and some spiders, as well as small mollusks. Black-throated Whipbird predominantly forages on the ground or occasionally in low vegetation, probing amongst leaf litter and on fallen branches, or gleaning from low vegetation to locate prey. Uniquely, black-throated Whipbird uses its bill, rather than feet, to manipulate leaves while searching for food.
Habitat
The black-throated Whipbird commonly resides in habitats characterized by dense shrubby undergrowth approximately 1.5 to 2 meters high, within heath-like thickets or under a sparse canopy of mallee eucalypt trees that reach 2 to 5 meters in height. Habitats preferable to the black-throated Whipbird often exist along coastal regions, though inland areas with similar vegetation are also suitable.
