Description
The great sapphirewing (Pterophanes cyanopterus) is a species of hummingbird in the family Trochilidae. It is found in Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist montane forest. At 15.5-17.5 cm (6–7 in) in length and weighing about 10 grams, this is one of the largest species of hummingbird, though slightly smaller than the Topaza hummingbirds and the giant hummingbird.

The great Sapphirewing resides in a range of forest settings such as humid evergreen and elfin woods, and at times near the tree-line where shrubby inclines meet sparse trees. It is also found in high-altitude grassy areas with a wet climate, as well as Polylepis woodlands. These habitats display a patchy distribution that adapts with changes in food availability.
