Description
The black-eared shrike-babbler (Pteruthius melanotis) is a bird species in the vireo family, Vireonidae. It was traditionally considered as an aberrant Old World babbler and formerly placed in the family Timaliidae. It was long noted that their habits resembled those of vireos, but this was previously ascribed to the result of convergent evolution. It is found in Southeast Asia from the Himalayas to western Malaysia. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist montane forests.

12 cm
Feeding Habits
Black-eared Shrike-babbler predominantly consumes large green grasshoppers and various insects. Black-eared Shrike-babbler forages alone or in groups, often joining mixed-species flocks, and exhibits sluggish, methodical arboreal movements within the canopy or mid-story.
Habitat
Black-eared Shrike-babbler primarily inhabits broadleaf evergreen forests, which maintain their foliage year-round, creating a stable and dense canopy. These birds are also found in forests dominated by the coniferous tree species Fokienia in certain regions. Their habitat spans across broader geographical regions of the Indian Subcontinent and Southeast Asia, including parts of China and Peninsular Malaysia, where these evergreen forests prevail.
