The golden-naped Finch typically inhabits areas with dense undergrowth, predominantly in submontane oak and rhododendron forests, including rhododendron thickets and scrub within mixed deciduous terrains. This species also frequents environments with ringal bamboo and patches of scrub, as well as nettles.
