The crimson-breasted finch (Rhodospingus cruentus), also known as the crimson finch-tanager, is a species of small finch-like bird native to woodland and scrub of western Ecuador and adjacent north-western Peru. It is the only member of the genus Rhodospingus. It has traditionally been placed in the family Emberizidae, but molecular phylogenetic studies have shown that it belongs to the tanager family Thraupidae. It is strongly sexually dichromatic, with males being blackish above and rich orange-red below and on the crown, while females are overall dull greyish-buff.

Feeding Habits
Crimson-breasted Finch primarily consumes seeds and likely small arthropods during breeding. Crimson-breasted Finch forages on the ground and on grass stems, varying arboreally with the seasons. Typically feeds alone or in pairs, joining flocks for non-breeding foraging, often with Sporophila seedeaters.
Habitat
The crimson-breasted Finch is typically found in the understorey of dry forests and desert scrub environments, as well as along the peripheries of these forests. Additionally, this bird inhabits dry scrub, low woodlands adjacent to areas with tall grass, and can occasionally be seen in agricultural regions that feature patches of grass and shrubby thickets.
