Description
The grey-throated martin or Asian plain martin (Riparia chinensis) is a small passerine bird in the swallow family. The grey-throated martin is found in open habitats such as farmland, grassland and savannah, usually near water. It is found from Tajikistan, Afghanistan and Indian subcontinent to southern China, Taiwan, and the northern Philippines. It was formerly considered a subspecies of the plain martin, since renamed the brown-throated martin.
Feeding Habits
Grey-throated Martin's diet is primarily insects like Chironimid midges and Anopheles mosquitoes. They forage in flocks, often with other hirundines, typically over water at an average height of 14 meters and also by skimming the water’s surface. They display a weak, fluttering flight and are known to feed intensively late in the evening, sometimes visiting grass fires in South Asia for feeding opportunities.
Habitat
The habitat of grey-throated Martin encompasses areas in proximity to various waterbodies such as rivers, lakes, and estuaries, particularly significant during the breeding season. These birds are also commonly found foraging over diverse landscapes, including grasslands, bushes, sand dunes, and agricultural areas like rice fields. They frequently roost in reedbeds, sewage works, and wetlands. Grey-throated Martin inhabits a broad range of environments across extensive geographical regions.
