Description
Overall, the male is black above and white below, but also with a white supercilium (sometimes absent), half-collar, and greater covert patch, and a variable-sized orange patch on the breast. Females differ from males in being browner above, more buff-toned below, and often lacking the white greater covert patch. The white throat and (usually white) supercilium are the most prominent external differences from the African stonechat S. torquatus, which has a wholly black head including the throat and supercilium.
Size
12 cm
Feeding Habits
Reunion Stonechat's diet consists mainly of small invertebrates like caterpillars, larvae, beetles, and spiders, and occasionally consumes lizards and fruits. It typically forages from rocks or branches, capturing prey on the ground or from vegetation, and may hop in search of food.
Habitat
The reunion Stonechat is typically found in a variety of habitats with open understories, such as scrublands to woodlands, often preferring areas with tamarind and mixed evergreen forests. These birds are also present in secondary vegetation and Philippia heath, though less commonly found as the terrain transitions to grasslands. They inhabit regions with open meadows and clearings, but their presence diminishes around dense forested areas and introduced non-native plant species habitats.
