Description

The chucao tapaculo (Scelorchilus rubecula) is a species of bird in the family Rhinocryptidae. It is found in central Chile and adjacent Argentina; it has also been spotted in the Magallanes Province. Its natural habitat is temperate forest. The diet of the chucao tapaculo is dominated by invertebrates and fruits. This bird show a pattern of aggressiveness and territoriality towards the other species of tapaculos in the forest of southern Chile. The chucao tapaculo seems vulnerable to the fragmentation of its habitat.

Chucao Tapaculo forages solitarily or in pairs, primarily consuming arthropods, seeds, centipedes, isopods, and occasionally snails. Diverse plant seeds, notably Myrtaceae, are also ingested. Chucao Tapaculo typically hunts on the ground under dense cover, venturing sometimes into semi-open spaces.
Habitat
The habitat of chucao Tapaculo primarily includes thickets of Chusquea bamboo within Nothofagus-dominated humid forests. This terrestrial bird typically resides at forest borders and in secondary woodland areas. Their preference for singing either from the ground or a low perch characterizes their behavior within these environments.
