Habitat
Dusky Tapaculo typically resides in dense shrub habitats, often near water bodies like damp ravines and rocky creeks. It favors environments with specific vegetation such as cacti and various shrub species, including those in the genus Berberis and Puya. Dusky Tapaculo can also be found on the edges of sclerophyll forests and is known to adapt to fragmented habitats within coastal cities. It is closely associated with dense shrubbery rather than forested or sloped areas without water courses. In certain regions where it is sympatric with other tapaculos, it occupies relict sclerophyll forests with a variety of native tree species. Dusky Tapaculo's presence is positively influenced by the structure of the understory and the availability of dead branches, but is negatively affected by the cover of native canopies and the size of habitat fragments.
