Sooty Tyrannulet primarily feeds on insects, captured through active foraging. Displays restless flitting between perches and sallies into the air, ground, or water to snatch prey. Its tail pumping and fanning behaviors accompany foraging.

Sooty Tyrannulet predominantly inhabits areas close to water sources, including rocky or brushy stream and river margins, irrigation ditches, farm ponds, and brushy pastures that feature standing water. It is also occasionally found in isolated patches of brush or woodlands not immediately adjacent to water bodies.
