Description
The hook-billed bulbul (Setornis criniger) is a species of songbird in the bulbul family, Pycnonotidae. It is found in eastern Sumatra and Borneo, where its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest and subtropical or tropical swamps. It is threatened by habitat loss. Alternate names for the hook-billed bulbul include the long hook-billed bulbul and long-billed bulbul. While currently monotypic within the genus Setornis, originally the genus contained the hairy-backed bulbul (now Tricholestes criniger viridis).

Hook-billed Bulbul consumes a mixed diet of fruits and invertebrates, including berries, beetles, dragonflies, ants, and spiders. It forages in pairs or groups, primarily in middle and lower vegetation layers, adept at extracting prey from cobwebs, indicative of specialized bill use.
Habitat
The habitat of hook-billed Bulbul includes stunted forest types such as kerangas or peat swamp forests. It also inhabits lowland dipterocarp forests, abandoned rubber plantations, and ecotonal areas between Shorea albida forest and peat swamp or kerangas, typically in the lowland regions near the coast.
