Description
The eurasian Nuthatch is a petite songbird common to deciduous forests. This species can often be seen nimbly hopping along branches and trunks - sometimes straight up or straight down - as it searches for insects. Like a woodpecker, it will peel away bark or drill into outer layers of wood.
Size
12 - 15 cm
Life Expectancy
9 years
Feeding Habits
Eurasian Nuthatch primarily consumes insects like caterpillars and beetles, supplementing its diet with nuts and seeds, especially hazelnuts and beech mast, in autumn and winter. Juveniles are fed similar insect-heavy diets. Eurasian Nuthatch also adapts to artificial feeding, eating items like fat and cheese from bird tables and feeders.
Habitat
Eurasian Nuthatch occupies mature woodlands with a preference for large, old trees that offer ample foraging opportunities and nesting cavities. Deciduous or mixed forests, often with oak, are particularly favored in broader Eurasian regions, but eurasian Nuthatch is also known to inhabit old spruce and pine forests, especially in mountainous areas. While primarily found in lowland forests in the northern parts of its range, eurasian Nuthatch can also be seen at higher elevations in southern Europe and parts of Asia, sometimes up to the treeline. Habitats such as riverine woodlands, parklands, and even old orchards are suitable provided there's a significant block of trees. Eurasian Nuthatch generally avoids small tree stands due to its territorial needs.

Distribution Area
The Eurasian nuthatch's breeding range extends across temperate Eurasia from Great Britain (but not Ireland) to Japan. It breeds south to the Mediterranean in Europe, although it is absent from the islands, other than Sicily, and in most of Russia the southern boundary is around 54–55°N. In the east, the range includes most of China and Taiwan and much of Korea.
