Description
It may be identified by the buff underside, smaller beak than in the Kashmir nuthatch (S. cashmirensis). The white on the upper tail coverts is difficult to see in the field. It has a small bill and rufous-orange underparts with unmarked bright rufous undertail-coverts. Resident in the sub-Himalayan range from Himachal Pradesh to Arunachal Pradesh and into the South Assam Hills (Lushai Hills). It breeds from March to May in broad-leaved and mixed forest.

Feeding Habits
White-tailed Nuthatch primarily consumes insects, nuts, and seeds. They forage individually or in pairs, sometimes in larger flocks or mixed-species groups, favoring mossy branches in tree canopies, less often trunks or shrubs.
Habitat
White-tailed Nuthatch inhabits a range of forested environments, primarily residing in subtropical and tropical moist montane forests as well as temperate broadleaf and mixed forests. These birds are associated with middle-altitude regions within broad geographical areas such as the Himalayas, showcasing a preference for mossy woodlands. They are especially fond of oak, rhododendron, maple, and hemlock forests and are usually found at elevations between 1500 to 3500 meters, but they can range from 500 meters up to 3050 meters depending on the season.
