Description
Krüper's nuthatch (Sitta krueperi) is a small nuthatch. The name commemorates the German naturalist Theodor Johannes Krüper.
Size
12 cm
Feeding Habits
Krüper's Nuthatch's diet swings from insects and arachnids in breeding seasons to conifer seeds in colder months. Foraging alone or in small groups, they skillfully navigate across forest strata, occasionally storing food for later. Unique to krüper's Nuthatch is the hoarding of pine seeds, especially for rainy periods when cones close.
Habitat
Krüper's Nuthatch is primarily found in dense and open woodlands. Its favored environments include forests dominated by Turkish pine, as well as those with a mix of spruce, fir, cedar, and occasionally juniper. This species adapts to a variety of woodland settings, from areas with scattered trees to old-growth forests and mixed woodlands that include beech, pines, and maple parkland. While it has a preference for conifer-dominated habitats, krüper's Nuthatch can also be found breeding in areas with broadleaf trees, provided conifers are nearby.
Dite type
Insectivorous
General Info
Behavior
The birds breed from mid March to late June in the pine forests of Antalya, Turkey. They forage in pairs and when one bird finds food, calls for the other to join. Courtship includes ritual feeding of the female by the male. They nest in decayed cavities or woodpecker holes. Only the female incubates the egg while the male feeds it. Males fluff up their feathers and assume a hunched posture when defending their territory. Fledglings are often seen hanging from branches.
Distribution Area
It is found in mainly in Western Asia, where it occurs in Turkey, Georgia, Russia, and on the Greek island of Lesvos. It is associated with Turkish pine (Pinus brutia) forests.
