Description
hey have a black stripe and black spots on the chest, the pattern of spots being unique for every penguin, like human fingerprints. They have pink glands above their eyes, which are used for thermoregulation. The hotter the penguin gets, the more blood is sent to these glands so it may be cooled by the surrounding air, thus making the glands more pink. This species exhibits slight sexual dimorphism: the males are slightly larger than the females and have longer beaks.

Feeding Habits
African Penguin primarily consume pelagic schooling fish, including southern African anchovy and Sardinops ocellata, as well as pelagic goby, round herring, and cephalopods. They exhibit adept foraging and hunting methods typically occurring during daylight. Distinctly, they possess strong swimming abilities to capture swift prey.
Habitat
African Penguin typically resides in marine environments, favoring inshore islands for nesting. Its preferred nesting sites are flat, sandy islands that provide some vegetation, although it can also nest on steep, rocky islands where vegetation is sparse. Rarely, african Penguin may choose sea caves along the mainland coast as a nesting locale. For foraging, african Penguin tends to stay inshore, usually within approximately 12 kilometers of the coast.

Distribution Area
The African penguin is only found on the south-western coast of Africa, living in colonies on 24 islands between Namibia and Algoa Bay, near Port Elizabeth, South Africa. It is the only penguin species that breeds in Africa and its presence gave name to the Penguin Islands. Two colonies were established by penguins in the 1980s on the mainland near Cape Town, namely Boulders Beach near Simon's Town and Stony Point in Betty's Bay.
Species Status
The African penguin is one of the species to which the Agreement on the Conservation of African–Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) applies. In November 2013 the African penguin was listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. In September 2010 it was listed as endangered under the US Endangered Species Act.
