The Andaman serpent eagle (Spilornis elgini) is a species of bird of prey in the family Accipitridae. It is endemic to the Andaman Islands in southeast India.
Size
54 cm
Feeding Habits
Andaman Serpent Eagle consumes various prey, primarily targeting birds, alongside frogs, lizards, rats, and snakes. It employs a perch-hunting technique consistent with its genus, waiting patiently before striking.
Habitat
The andaman Serpent Eagle chiefly inhabits tropical moist lowland forests, favoring areas with a mix of scattered trees and forest clearings. Broadly, its distribution encompasses subtropical mangrove forests, extending to open hillsides intermittently dotted with trees. Typically, these environments are situated at elevations from sea level up to 700 meters. Despite being often in close proximity to a related raptor species in inland regions, the andaman Serpent Eagle is more commonly encountered and is distinguishable by its preference for interior forest habitats rather than coastal areas.
