Description
The dark-throated seedeater (Sporophila ruficollis) is a bird species in the family Thraupidae (formerly in Emberizidae). It is found in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay (where it can still be found at the Quebrada de los Cuervos). Its natural habitats are dry savanna and subtropical or tropical seasonally wet or flooded lowland grassland. It is becoming rare due to habitat loss.

Feeding Habits
Dark-throated Seedeater primarily subsist on grass seeds, demonstrating a clinging foraging technique on stems, either solitarily or within small or mixed-species groups.
Habitat
Dark-throated Seedeater typically occupies old, tall grasslands which may include moist grassy swales but does not rely heavily on adjacent marshlands as some related species do. Its habitat also extends to roadside grassy areas with sufficiently tall grass and scrubby regions, not always in proximity to water, with a preference for grassy cerrado habitats during the non-breeding season. The species is predominantly found within these environments across broader South American grassland regions.
