Feeding Habits
Yellow-billed Tern primarily consumes small fish, shrimp, and insects. They exhibit aerial foraging by diving and skimming the water. Their diet and behavior showcase adaptations for surface feeding on aquatic prey.
Habitat
The yellow-billed Tern is typically found in areas associated with large rivers, such as riverine sandbars and lake beaches. Their habitat preferences extend to inland river systems and lakes, with a propensity for less vegetative and more remote spots that facilitate large colonies. These locations often include shoals and tributary mouths that are ideal for feeding. While mainly inland dwellers, non-breeding yellow-billed Tern disperse to coastal regions and various water bodies, ranging from coastal estuaries and brackish lagoons to freshwater ponds and rice fields. The species demonstrates a more restricted habitat range to larger rivers compared to some sympatric terns and skimmers.
