Description
The black-headed tanager (Stilpnia cyanoptera) is a species of bird in the family Thraupidae. It is found in the northern highlands of South America (Andes of northeastern Colombia, Venezuelan Coastal Range and tepuis of southern Venezuela). Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist montane forests, subtropical or tropical high-altitude shrubland, and heavily degraded former forest.

The black-headed Tanager is typically found in moist to moderately humid woodland environments, frequently inhabiting the edges of forests, open clearings with scattered trees, and lightly wooded areas. It also adapts well to human-altered landscapes, such as shade trees in coffee plantations. Preferring regions with a general characteristics of premontane and montane sandy soil forests, secondary growth, and scrub dominated by melastomes, this species occupies a broad geographical range in northern South America.
