Description
The great spinetail (Synallaxis hypochondriaca) is a species of bird in the family Furnariidae. It is endemic to Peru where its natural habitat is Mediterranean-type shrubby vegetation. It is threatened by habitat loss. This species was formerly considered monotypic within the genus Siptornopsis but molecular phylogenetic studies have shown that it is embedded within Synallaxis.

The great Spinetail primarily resides in xerophytic environments, which are characterized by dense and arid thorny montane woody scrub areas. This habitat typically features a dominance of Acacia trees and cacti, supplemented by varieties of Bombax and Alnus trees in areas of lower elevation. The species shows a preference for stream gullies that contain flowing water.
