Description
It has a dark throat patch and a contrasting rufous crown and wings. The tail structure is also typical of the genus, being long and steeply graduated, with sharply pointed individual feathers, the central pair thinning towards the tip.

The spix's Spinetail typically inhabits dense second growth scrub and similar environments within broader Atlantic lowland forests. It favors areas with thick undergrowth, such as capoeira (brushy vegetation), grass clumps, and thickets, often in marshy regions. Additionally, spix's Spinetail can be found in fragmented forests, gallery and riparian forests, as well as anthropogenic landscapes like fields, pastures, and areas alongside roads.
