Description

The many-spotted hummingbird (Taphrospilus hypostictus) is a species of hummingbird in the family Trochilidae. It is the only member of the genus Taphrospilus. It is found in lower Andean foothills from Ecuador, through Peru and Bolivia, to north-western Argentina. Previously also listed for Brazil, but this now considered mistaken, it not being included on the official list by CBRO. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest and subtropical or tropical moist montane forests.

Feeding Habits
Many-spotted Hummingbird primarily feeds on nectar from diverse plants such as Palicoura, Centropogon, and Pitcairnia. They also catch insects mid-air by hawking, typically over streams or clearings. While generally solitary, many-spotted Hummingbird may gather at artificial feeders.
Habitat
Many-spotted Hummingbird inhabits humid foothills and lower subtropical forest environments. These habitats typically include forest edges, particularly alongside small ravines within the Andean foothills. Many-spotted Hummingbird is adapted to foraging within the understory, preferring the lower to mid-strata of dense vegetation, and generally manifests a propensity to dwell inside the forest rather than at the periphery.
