Feeding Habits
Brown-crowned Tchagra predominantly consumes insects like grasshoppers, moths, and beetles, occasionally adding spiders and small lizards. Foraging mainly on the ground, brown-crowned Tchagra runs and hops beneath bushes, less often capturing prey in flight. Sometimes found in mixed-species groups, it is less arboreal and more reclusive than related species.
Habitat
Brown-crowned Tchagra is typically found in a range of bushy woodland and savanna habitats across broader geographical regions of sub-Saharan Africa. These include subtropical or tropical dry forests, forest-savanna edges, and dry savannas at low to medium altitudes. Brown-crowned Tchagra prefers thickets, including those in gallery forests, abandoned forest clearings, derelict farmlands, and areas of secondary growth. It is also found in acacia thornbush areas, bamboo edge thickets, and various woodlands composed of brachystegia and mopane trees.
