Description
The swallow tanager is 14.5–15 cm (5.7–5.9 in) in length with a broad flat bill. This bird is strongly sexually dimorphic. The male is bright turquoise blue with a back face and throat. The turquoise flanks have black barring and the lower belly is white. The female is bright green with dusky-olive barring on the flanks. She lacks the black face mask. They are gregarious but do not associate with other species. They mainly eat fruit but they will also sally after insects from an exposed perch. The swallow tanagers are unique among tanagers in that they will sometimes dig a hole in a bank for a nest.

Feeding Habits
Swallow Tanager primarily feed on fruits and insects, including arils and larger berries, preferring fat and protein-rich varieties. Their diet also consists of arthropods, moths, and larvae, with occasional mistletoe berries and Cecropia catkins. They have a preference for certain foods like Michelia champaca in southern Brazil.
Habitat
The swallow Tanager thrives in various forested environments including dry, moist, and humid forest borders. Predominantly found in older second-growth woodlands and occasionally amongst shade trees in agricultural areas like coffee plantations. This species favors fragmented landscapes with scattered trees and is visible in, or atop, the canopy of dense humid forests, as well as along tall riparian wooded areas. Geographically, its habitat spans from lowland Amazonia to mountainous regions, ranging from sea level up to 2,100 meters in elevation across broader regions of South America.
