The Amazonian antshrike (Thamnophilus amazonicus) is a species of bird in the family Thamnophilidae, the antbirds. It occurs in the Amazon Basin of Brazil, and east to Maranhão state; also Amazonian Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. It is in the Guianas in Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana, also two regions of Venezuela. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical swamps. The Amazonian antshrike is found in the entire Amazon Basin and the Guianas, minus a small region in southwestern Venezuela and Roraima state Brazil in the northwest section of the Basin. Feeding Habits
Amazonian Antshrike primarily consumes insects like larvae and katydids, and arthropods including spiders. It forages 5-17m above ground, utilizing quick hops and stabbing bill motions to glean prey from vegetation, and may join mixed-species flocks or follow army ants for food.
Habitat
The habitat of amazonian Antshrike commonly encompasses the understorey and mid-storey of lowland evergreen forests, as well as edges and second-growth areas, with preferences varying among different subspecies. Amazonian Antshrike is often found in habitats ranging from sandy-soil savanna woodlands and shrubby forest borders to liana-rich terra firme and river environs. While some subspecies prefer the peripheries of terra firme and seasonally flooded forests, others are more prevalent in forest clearings, dense secondary growths, and bamboo stands.
