Description
Natterer's slaty antshrike (Thamnophilus stictocephalus) is a species of bird in the family Thamnophilidae. It is found in northern Bolivia (Beni Department and Santa Cruz Department) and Brazil (in the southern Amazon between the Tocantins River, Xingu, Tapajós, and Madeira Rivers). It was previously included in the widespread slaty antshrike (T. punctatus), but following the split, this scientific name is now restricted to the northern slaty antshrike. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical dry forests and subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests. Natterer's slaty antshrike was described by the Austrian ornithologist August von Pelzeln in 1868 and given its current binomial name Thamnophilus stictocephalus.

Feeding Habits
Natterer's Slaty Antshrike consumes a variety of insects such as lepidopteran larvae and orthopterans, and arthropods. Foraging behavior includes short hops and pauses to scan for prey, using bill stabs and upward-directed sallies for gleaning. Distinctively shivers tail while foraging and sometimes follows army ants.
Habitat
The habitat of natterer's Slaty Antshrike includes the understory and mid-story of lowland evergreen forests, especially at forest edges, as well as deciduous and semi-deciduous woodlands. These birds are typically found in regions with sandy-soil forest 'islands' within larger forest areas and areas of stunted semi-deciduous forest on rocky outcrops. Natterer's Slaty Antshrike also inhabits gallery forests and forest light-gaps, frequently at the edges of extensive evergreen forests bordered by grassland and cerrado.
