Feeding Habits
Blue-breasted Cordonbleu feeds primarily on a variety of small grass seeds, insects, and arachnids. Blue-breasted Cordonbleu forages on the ground and in vegetation, pecking at seeds or sweeping the bill through debris. They display agility by forcing grass-heads to the ground to access seeds and skillfully remove husks with their bills. Blue-breasted Cordonbleu also consumes termites and caterpillars, often foraging in pairs or groups, sometimes with other estrildids.
Habitat
Blue-breasted Cordonbleu typically inhabits well-watered and semi-arid savannas enriched with Acacia woodland, mopane forests, and thicket environments. These birds favor areas with abundant umbrella thorns and are frequently found in natural growth amid cultivated lands. They also reside around rural settlements, gardens, and near water sources, adapting to overgrown cultivation and forest edges. Geographically, the species is found in regions with elevation ranges from lowlands to high plateaus within the savanna belt.
