Feeding Habits
Long-toed Lapwing primarily consumes aquatic insects, larvae, dragonfly nymphs, beetles, ants, and small snails. It forages on floating vegetation surfaces and stirs water with one foot to dislodge prey, similar to V. armatus and V. spinosus. Long-toed Lapwing also follows Spur-winged Geese to feed on uncovered food. It's mostly solitary but can gather in groups, particularly in the dry season.
Habitat
The long-toed Lapwing typically inhabits a variety of wetland environments, commonly found in areas with stagnant waters such as lakes, pools, marshes, as well as swamps, rivers, and floodplains. They forage on the floating vegetation of these water bodies and feed along the muddy edges, especially during the dry season. In the wet season, long-toed Lapwing can be found in inundated grasslands and flooded agricultural fields like rice paddies within broader lowland regions.
