Feeding Habits
Andean Lapwing primarily consumes insects, mollusks, and other small invertebrates, foraging mainly by sight. Unique adaptations include a preference for high-altitude grasslands, exhibiting a specialized foraging strategy in such ecosystems.
Habitat
The andean Lapwing inhabits open grassy areas, including shore meadows, parts of marshes, rushy pastures, and boggy páramo and puna zones. These birds are typically found near freshwater sources such as lakes and rivers and prefer hummocky grounds that may be partly inundated. They tend to avoid saline waters and can occasionally adapt to short grasslands and dry hillsides. In the cooler months, andean Lapwing are found at lower altitudes and may sometimes venture to coastal regions.
