Description
The name dusky indigobird can also refer to Vidua purpurascens. The dusky indigobird, variable indigobird, or black widowfinch (Vidua funerea) is a species of bird in the family Viduidae. It is found in Angola, Burundi, Cameroon, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Guinea-Bissau, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Its natural habitat is moist savanna.

Feeding Habits
Variable Indigobird primarily consume small grass seeds, foraged from the ground using a 'double-scratch' technique. During breeding, females also eat host eggs, and males forage within territories, with females feeding near call-sites.
Habitat
Variable Indigobird typically resides in moist woodlands and alongside montane and riverine forest fringes. It favors grassy terrains that include annual grasses, ferns, weeds, and areas with dense vegetation. Variable Indigobird is also found in minimally cultivated lands, orchards, roadside verges, and occasionally adapts to human-altered environments such as village outskirts and gardens.
