Description

The ocellated woodcreeper (Xiphorhynchus ocellatus) is a species of bird in the Dendrocolaptinae subfamily of the ovenbird family (Furnariidae). Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical moist montane forests.

Feeding Habits
Ocellated Woodcreeper predominantly feeds on small insects, averaging 0.5 cm, occasionally consuming larger prey up to 4 cm. Ocellated Woodcreeper forages by hitching up trunks and branches from understory to subcanopy, usually with mixed-species flocks, and exhibits a high degree of dietary overlap and aggression with similar woodcreeper species. It defensively manages territories encapsulating multiple flocks and shows unique territorial behavior with X. elegans.
Habitat
The ocellated Woodcreeper primarily resides in dense evergreen forests, with a notable presence in the montane evergreen and cloud forests, as well as terra firme and seasonally flooded forests. It shows a preference for the interior of mature forests but is also adaptable to marginal habitats such as mid-successional vegetation, second growth, and forest edges. Its distribution is chiefly within the Amazonian lowlands and includes areas near rivers, swamps, or forests on sandy soils. The ocellated Woodcreeper exhibits a patchy distribution which may be indicative of specific, yet not well-understood, habitat preferences.
