Description
This common sparrow has a white crown atop its head, which gave it its name, as well as a neat pattern down its wings and a long tail. Some groups of white-crowned Sparrows migrate, while others remain in coastal habitats year-round. Across different groups of these birds are different song “dialects” which are widely studied.

Feeding Habits
White-crowned Sparrow primarily consume seeds from weeds and grasses, as well as various insects like caterpillars, wasps, and beetles, especially in summer. Their diet also consists of grains such as oats, wheat, barley, and corn, in addition to fruits like elderberries and blackberries.
Habitat
White-crowned Sparrow typically inhabit open or shrubby locales such as tundra, alpine meadows, and forest peripheries. These birds favor environments with a mix of bare ground and grasses for breeding. At varying altitudes and climates, they adapt to available conditions. In winter and migration periods, they seek out dense thickets, weedy fields, agricultural lands, as well as urban areas like roadsides and gardens for sustenance and refuge.
Nest Behavior
Females of white-crowned Sparrow construct the nest over 2-9 days. Their nesting habits entail the careful selection of materials and a hiding spot for protection.
Nest Characteristics
The nest of white-crowned Sparrow is often located low in shrubs or on the ground among mosses and lichens. Made of twigs, coarse grasses, pine needles, and more, it's lined with fine grasses and hair. The nest measures about 5 inches across and 2 inches deep.

Behavior
White-crowned Sparrow exhibit a distinct pattern of foraging by hopping on the ground and amidst low vegetation in their brushy environments. A characteristic 'double-scratching' motion—backward hopping coupled with a pounce forward—is a common sight as they sift through litter for food. These birds engage in seasonal pair bonding; they reconnect with mates upon returning to breeding territories after wintering apart, with a high rate of pair reunification. Nesting commences with snowmelt. Post-fledging, young white-crowned Sparrow display limited movement, taking a week to develop flight skills. Remarkably, siblings may travel together for extended periods beyond fledging.
Distribution Area
Their breeding habitat is brushy areas across northern Canada and the western United States. The white-crowned sparrow is a very rare vagrant to western Europe. It has been sighted in England, Scotland, Ireland, and Norway. In 2008 a white-crowned sparrow was spotted in Cley next the Sea in Norfolk, England. To commemorate the event an image of the bird was included in a window at St Margaret's Church.
